Fall 2010 Lancaster and Lebanon Adult and Family Literacy Education Class Schedule
The following Adult Basic and Family Literacy Education programs are funded with federal, state and local grant dollars and are available to adults at no cost. Space in these classes is limited and first priority is given to existing students and those adults who make a commitment to attend class regularly.
Distance Education allows adults who are not able to attend class regularly to study for their GED diploma online. A distance education teacher communicates regularly with learners and helps each individual understand what s/he needs to study and when s/he is ready to take the GED test. Distance learning requires a great deal of self-discipline as well as the technology to support learning. For some adults, this is an excellent option for GED preparation.
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available for adult non-native speakers of English who want to improve their English language skills. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are available at a variety of locations in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Classes are communicative in nature and require regular attendance for students to see progress.
Family Literacy classes assist parents in their role as a child’s first, and most important, teacher. Parents and children attend classes together at a variety of locations in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. While children attend school or preschool, parents work on GED or English as a Second Language skills. During instruction, adults not only focus on their own learning, but also spend time on topics that will help them be more effective parents. Interactive Learning Activities (ILA) provide opportunities for parents and children to work together in support of the child’s early literacy development.
General Education Development (GED) Preparation is available to adults in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who are at least 17 years of age and not currently enrolled in a public school. Morning, afternoon, evening, and online classes are available to adults who lack a secondary education diploma or who simply want to improve their basic skills in reading and/or math.
Health Careers and Basic Skills classes are available for adults who are interested in entering Health Care professions. Students can prepare for Certified Nurse Aide Training (CNA) classes or the Nurse Entrance Examination (NET). Students learn medical terminology, study skills, and obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
Math instruction is available for adults who want to brush up their skills or find math concepts particularly challenging. Instructors help students master the basic math concepts needed to pass the GED test, Nurse Entrance Examination, or to enter postsecondary education. Students of all levels can benefit from the math instruction available through IU 13.
