Preparing students with disabilities to become successful workers requires hands-on experiences beyond what is offered in a traditional school setting. IU 13 works with over 700 businesses in Lancaster and Lebanon counties to provide youth with the work-based experiences they need to successfully transition from the classroom to the workplace. These programs not only support students but they also benefit the community by providing a supervised labor pool.
Basic Occupational Skills (BOS)
The BOS program serves high school students with disabilities who have the potential for competitive employment in unskilled labor positions. The purpose of the program is to provide daily instruction and concrete work experiences that allow students to master specific workplace skills. These experiences build partnerships with private industry and often lead to employment opportunities for students when they leave school.
Job Training Skills
The Job Training program provides career-developing opportunities for students with disabilities ages 16-21 years. The purpose of the programs is to enhance career awareness, to explore various industries, and to develop work related skills.
School-to-Work (STW) Program
The STW program provides community-based training in real work settings. The program, which is available for high school students with disabilities, is designed to help students learn self-determination and functional academics, and to establish linkages to adult service agencies.
