2011 Project SAIL Camp Descriptions

Camp Invention - The SPARK Program  - For students entering Grades 2-6

Two weeklong sessions available! Select July 11-15, 2011 OR July 18-22, 2011!
9:00 AM-3:30 PM
Tuition: $240 per student
Location: Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13, 1020 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster, PA

Children will experience inquiry-based learning through FUN activities that will help them unleash their creative genius. The Camp Invention program consists of five exciting modules that are designed to provide a unique opportunity to explore the unknown, tinker with ideas, and satisfy an innate sense of curiosity. Children must tap into their creativity to solve real-world challenges and work as a team, using problem solving as a portal to discovery.

This year’s SPARK program features:

  • The Curious Cypher Club™ - Stop the mysterious messages being sent to the Curious Cypher Club! Build a clubhouse, crack puzzling codes, and discover why these messages are being sent!
  • Bounce! An Atomic Journey™ - Bounce your way through atoms, molecules, mixtures, and compounds to discover the science behind balls, and create your very own bouncy ball to take home!
  • W!LD: Wondrous Innovations and Living Designs™ - How are cuttlefish, beetles, and geckos alike? Join us on a W!LD animal adventure as we investigate the most innovative survival traits on the planet!
  • Game On: Power Play™ - Practice teamwork, coordination, and creative problem-solving skills as we explore new games and add our own twist to create high-energy challenges!
  • I Can Invent: Edison’s Workshop™ - Using real tools, take apart a broken appliance and upcycle its gears and gadgets to create ball-rolling and Rube Goldberg-type machines!

Cutting Edge Care - Science and Technology in Action - For students entering Grades 7-10 

July 18-22, 2011
Monday-Thursday 9:00 AM-2:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Tuition: $140 per student
Location: Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13, 1020 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster, PA

Today, a face transplant or stem cell research hits the headlines. What will tomorrow’s new medical discovery be? See what’s on the horizon of cutting-edge care as we explore the many exciting breakthroughs that save and enhance lives through areas including organ and tissue donation, radiology and ultrasound, emergency trauma care, and current medical research.

Meet – live and via videoconference – with scientists and medical professionals to discover how science and technology are breaking new ground in prevention/detection, diagnosis, and treatment options. Meet new friends, learn together through hands-on activities, explore career options, and have fun…maybe YOU will be the professional on the cutting edge, saving lives in the future!

Cutting Edge Care Camp planned activities include on-site or online sessions with:

  • Lancaster Regional Hospital –  Visit with the Ultrasound department
  • Lancaster General Hospital – Visit with the Trauma Team at the hospital
  • Pinnacle Health/Harrisburg Hospital – Living Organ Donor Chains
  • Life Sciences Education Center, Marian University (live videoconference) – Life-Saving Nature
  • Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation – Tissue Donation and Transplantation
  • Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative – Tissue Regeneration
  • Gift of Life Donor Program – Organ Donation
