Adults who want to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and/or math work with a knowledgeable and supportive classroom teacher to target individual goals which can include job readiness skills and preparation for the General Educational Development (GED) exam.

Corrections Education

Services are provided to inmates in the county prisons in order to prepare them for employment or further training and education. Classes include instruction in basic reading, writing, and math; preparation for the GED; and English as a second language. Family literacy services are also available to inmates in an effort to strengthen families and foster the literacy development of both parents and children.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Recent immigrants and refugees as well as others who wish to learn English or improve their communication and/or academic skills in English speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary development, grammar, and pronunciation will find well-designed and engaging classes available at various levels of English. Special emphasis is given to those competencies needed to function effectively in the community.

Family Literacy/Even Start

The family literacy program recognizes that parents are their children's most important teachers. Classes focus on the needs of families and are tailored around these components:

  • Adult basic education including basic skills in reading, writing, and math as well as preparation for the GED exam and English as a second language
  • Early childhood education for children birth through Grade 3
  • Home Visits
  • Parent-and-child-together time (PACT) focusing on meaningful literacy activities for families
  • Parenting education

General Educational Development (GED) Education

Classes help to prepare adults for the GED and include instruction in each of the five test areas: Literature and the Arts, Social Studies, Science, Writing Skills, and Mathematics. Adult learners work with a knowledgeable and supportive classroom teacher to target specific areas for instruction and practice.

Workforce Education Programs

Classes are designed around the specific needs of a company and its workers, and can include basic skills training, English instruction, and training in more advanced skills to assist employees to advance in their jobs.
