Grant Amount:
Project Name
Dunmore High School
$5,000.00
Raising OTD Awareness through Education
Project Activities:
Dunmore High School plans to implement OTDA Education in order to expand their already existing curriculum content. Due to individual experiences with donation, several teachers, a student, and the student’s family would like to address donation issues in a cross-curricular and sustainable fashion and they feel that an OTDA mini-grant award would facilitate that. Some of the content areas for implementation will be: health and physical education, Advanced Biology, Psychology/Sociology, Speech Composition Science (ethics), and Drivers' Education. Among the numerous classroom and school events proposed are: Donation Awareness Days, classroom research and speech projects, guest speakers and a field trip to a tissue bank. The educators at Dunmore High School believe that between approximately 600 students in grades 7-12, though the grant is specifically for implementation in grades 9-12, will be exposed to some activities directly related to the OTDA Education Project mini-grant..

Hampton High School

Wellness II: Decisions for Life
Project Activities:
This Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness project will be a timely addition to the curricular content at Hampton High School. Recently, there have been several school and community members whose lives have been touched by donation in real and painful ways. Due to these events, the school is highly enthusiastic about implementation. At Hampton, all juniors, beginning in the 2005-2006 school year, will be required to pass a new health unit, entitled Wellness II. A group of five faculty members will participate in designing a unit on organ and tissue donation awareness, initially using material provided in the OTDA Curriculum Framework and Classroom Toolkit, as part of the Wellness II course. This course will support the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Health, Safety and Physical Education in two areas: Concepts of Health, Standard 10.1, and Healthful Living, Standard 10.2. Each year approximately 250 eleventh graders will participate in this instruction. Most of these students have a driver’s license, making this an appropriate age at which to encounter and discuss important adult decisions.

Extending a Hand of Hope to Save Lives
Project Activities:
The OTDA Curriculum framework will be implemented a Ridley School District primarily via their Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II classes for Junior and Senior students. The science teachers in charge of teaching the OTDA material will show other science teachers at the Delaware County Science Teachers Mini-Convention at Strath Haven High School and the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association Convention at Hershey how they can easily implement the OTDA material into various courses at the high school level. Students will actually perform an ELISA test showing antigen-antibody reaction using BIO-RAD’s Immuno Explorer Kit that was purchased with part of the grant money

Grant Amount:
Project Name
Shenandoah Valley High School
$3,432.00
Organ & Tissue Donation - Student, School, & Community Awareness
Project Activities:
At this time Shenandoah Valley High School is in the process of revamping their curriculum to align it with PA Academic Standards, making it the perfect time to incorporate OTDA into classes. The OTDA framework will be incorporated into what is already taught in the Biology II course and integrated into the Anatomy and Physiology course. The school is also working to find a way to fit the OTDA framework into all grades of English. Through these courses, Shenandoah Valley High School hopes to educate over 550 students about organ and tissue donation. Some of the suggested activities for OTDA integration include guest speakers, field trips to the Hershey and/or Geisinger Medical Centers, and activities and projects, such as ideas for senior projects and poster contests. With grant money the school plans to purchase encyclopedias and CD-ROMs on the human body.
