IU 13 Receives Regional Award
IU 13's Adult Education and Community Education programs were recently awarded the Nicholas Cericola Memorial Award for “demonstrating a leadership role in initiating, developing, or promoting effective family/parent involvement programs, practices, or partnerships.” IU 13 was one of two recipients of the award in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania . The Conference Center at IU 13 Is Poised to Serve
Since opening in 2006, the Conference Center at IU 13 has hosted more than 5,000 events with over 150,000 in attendance. This includes events such as: the IU 13 Legislative Breakfast, the Lancaster County Workforce Investment, staff trainings, and corporate events for Lancaster General Hospital.
In the spring of 2008, IU 13 decided to expand the conference center to meet the growing demand for services. Three new rooms were added, including a multi-purpose room with a durable floor and sinks. In total, the Conference Center at IU 13 has 13 rooms, which include two computer labs, a multi-purpose room, large rooms for staff trainings, and smaller rooms for meetings. All of the rooms offer state-of-the-art technology such as videoconferencing and WiFi access. The facility is also supported by a customer service team for event management and technology assistance. The Conference Center at IU 13 is open for use by school districts, educational agencies, and businesses for a fee. (November 2008)
IU 13 Students Reach Out to the Community
A group of students from IU 13's Community School Southeast joined Habitat for Humanity for a day, building relationships and exploring different job skills. (September 2008)
IU 13 Staff Members Make Contribution to Daniel's Den Playground
A group of IU 13 staff members took a personal interest in the local playground Daniel's Den. The individuals contributed funds and donated time to support the cause. (September 2008)
IU 13 Students Participate in Senior Night Festivities
Students from the IU 13 Multiple Disabilities Classroom at Elizabethtown Area High School were invited to participate in the Senior Night festivities as flag bearers prior to the football game. (October 2008)
Local Businesses Support Lancaster-Lebanon Education Foundation
The Lancaster-Lebanon Education Foundation recently received over $5,400 in employee pledges, and contributions from Lift, Inc.; PPL Montour, LLC; GIANT Food Stores, LLC; D&E Communications, Inc.; and Fulton Bank. (December 2008)
The Conference Center at IU 13 Hosts the Lancaster 2020 Event
Last month, The Conference Center at IU 13 had the privilege of hosting the event “Lancaster 2020 – Shaping Our Future,” which was coordinated by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, the United Way of Lancaster County, and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event drew 300+ diverse community leaders from Lancaster County to IU 13 where they spent a full day talking together about the future of the community. These leaders established a vision, identified values, and prioritized opportunities and actions within four topic areas: Well Being of People, Connections and Collaboration, Economic Engine, and Physical Environment.
Participants worked together in small groups discussing and developing ideas. Then, using keypad polling and groupware laptop computers, they identified themes and collective priorities. “We were very pleased to have the opportunity to host this event for the community,” commented Dr. Cynthia Burkhart, Executive Director of IU 13. “The event provided an opportunity for IU 13 to play a central role in a powerful and influential countywide event.” (December 2008)
IU 13 Spearheads Community Engagement Team in Lebanon
IU 13 is spearheading the Community Engagement for Early Care and Education Team. Funded by the Department of Welfare and Office of Child Development and Early Learning, the team focuses on child development from birth to age 5, involving everything from reading to dental hygiene.
Last month, IU 13 invited community agencies such as Child Care Information Services of Lebanon County, United Way of Lebanon County , LutherCARE Child Care Programs, Child and Adolescent Services Systems to a meeting with IU 13 supervisors. The group discussed parent and public education, professional development opportunities, and school readiness efforts. The team will continue its work by conducting assessments, exploring issues, and providing resolutions in the areas of early education and child development. (November 2008)
