Description: As more diverse students are included in classrooms, teachers and schools are looking for ways to ensure the success of all students through the development of academic language, content and skills. Jane Hill, co-author of Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners, a comprehensive guide to helping students at all levels of language development succeed, will share the nine categories of research-based instructional strategies first identified in Classroom Instruction That Works (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001) through a filter of five stages of language acquisition. Jane will lead participants through an in-depth exploration of critical strategies for the success of ALL students including: summarizing and note-taking, setting objectives and providing feedback, cues, questions and advance organizers, using nonlinguistic representations, homework and practice, generating and testing hypotheses, reinforcing effort and providing recognition, and identifying similarities and differences. Many practical examples and strategies that can be used to meet the needs of diverse learners in the classroom will be shared. Participants will receive a comprehensive resource, Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners manual (ASCD).

On March 6, 2008, Jane Hill, co-author of Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners, a comprehensive guide to helping students at all levels of language development succeed, shared research-based instructional strategies first identified in Classroom Instruction That Works (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001) through a filter of five stages of language acquisition. Participants explored setting objectives, providing feedback, cues and questions, nonlinguistic representation, and summarizing (Day 1). On November 19, 2008, Jane will present Day 2 of the workshop series. She will lead participants through an in-depth exploration of critical strategies for the success of ALL students including note-taking, advance organizers, using cooperative learning, homework and practice, generating and testing hypotheses, reinforcing effort and providing recognition, and identifying similarities and differences. Day 2 will build on the research foundation and understanding of the stages of language acquisition acquired on Day 1. Many practical examples and strategies that can be used to meet the needs of diverse learners in the classroom will be shared. Participants will receive a comprehensive resource, Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners manual (ASCD).

NOTE: Participants must attend BOTH Day 1 (March 6, 2008 OR November 18, 2008) AND Day 2 (November 19, 2008) to register for Day 3 Train the Trainer (November 20, 2008).
