English as a Second Language

K-12 English as a Second Language Program

As the number of English Language Learners in our schools has dramatically increased, IU 13 has increased its services to support English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in local districts.

Adult Education

IU 13's ESL program for adults offers free classes to permanent U.S. residents in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Non-native speakers of English can build vocabulary, writing, grammar, and communication skills by interacting meaningfully with learners from countries around the world. On an annual basis, over 1,500 adult ESL learners are served through this program in Lancaster and Lebanon.

For visitors to the United States and foreign students interested in learning English, IU 13's adult education program offers classes through the International English Training (IET) program. This program offers tuition-based instruction to persons who have come to the United States for the purpose of learning English and plan to return to their native countries.

About 25 teachers are currently working in Lancaster and Lebanon's ESL programs for adults.
