No Child Left Behind
On
January 8, 2002, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was reauthorized
by the No Child Left Behind Act, P.L. 107-110. The purpose of the No Child
Left Behind Act of 2001 is "...to ensure that all children have a
fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education
and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement
standards and state academic assessments."
Key elements of the Act include:
- Creates strong standards and accountability for results
- Provides for state and local flexibility
- Reduces red tape
- Focuses resources on research-based approaches
- Expands choices for parents
