Annie Sullivan Award Presented to IU13 Physical Therapist

Dr. Tanya Myers, of Lititz, PA, was recently named the 2016 Annie Sullivan Award Winner by Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). The award recognizes a professional staff member who exemplifies caring involvement of students with disabilities, and goes beyond the duties of the classroom in helping others in the school and community to understand and accept people with disabilities.  It is named after Helen Keller’s teacher and is presented to a professional in special education who has been nominated by his/her peers.

Dr. Myers is a physical therapist for IU13, traveling between several locations to work with students.

As part of the nomination process staff, students, and parents of students offered testimonials. Here are some excerpts from their testimonials, which exemplify the dedication Tanya has for her work and students.

“Over the course of my career, I have worked with many different physical therapists and Tanya is without a doubt, the most highly respected and knowledgeable. Her willingness to listen and compassion for her students remains unmatched by others.” (Coworker)

“Tanya consistently goes above and beyond what is required of her in her role. Her depth of knowledge, caring attitude, and persistent commitment have been a blessing to my son and our entire family.” (Parent of a student)

“I value having the opportunity to work with Tanya on a regular basis. She is truly an exceptional physical therapist that puts her all into doing what is needed to facilitate the success of children in school, but also in their home and community.” (Coworker)

“Dr. Myers has exceptional skills as a physical therapist. I am continually amazed at her ability to work with each student in such a positive and caring manner.” (School District Administrator)

“People that go above and beyond. People that realize sometimes these children need their help on other days besides the few hours a week they are scheduled…. These are the types of people we need and want around our special children.” (Parent of student – speaking about Dr. Myers)

IU13 presents one staff member with the Annie Sullivan Award each year, as do most intermediate units across the Commonwealth.  Tanya was officially recognized by the IU13 Board of Directors at the May Board Meeting (5/1816). While accepting the award she explained that upon learning about the work of Annie Sullivan she became inspired to help others as a teacher.
