Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers. Users have access to electronic mail communications with people all over the world, information and news from NASA and other research institutions, public domain and shareware of all types, and discussion groups on a plethora of topics. The Internet is a tremendous educational resource but also contains information not appropriate for K-12 schools. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) mandates that schools must have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in order to receive E-rate funding. IU 13 worked with its member districts to develop a model AUP. This AUP is the work of technology coordinators from more than ten districts. IU 13’s solicitor has approved the AUP meeting all requirements of CIPA.

Services Provided

Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 will forward the model AUP to any interested K-12 school district. The AUP includes optional student and faculty signoff sheets for those to have signed documents of compliance.

Benefits
CIPA requires every school district to develop an AUP or Internet Safety Policy (ISP). Lancaster-Lebanon worked with its districts to avoid having each district waste time researching, writing, and getting solicitor approval for their AUP. By developing a model AUP for all districts, member districts saved both money and time complying with CIPA.
