Engineering By Design
What Is EbD?
Engineering byDesign™ (EbD)™ is founded on the principle that student’s untapped ingenuity holds immense potential for shaping the future of technology and innovation. EbD™ immerses students in authentic problem- and project-based learning environments and this approach not only teaches essential concepts and principles but also prepares students for future STEM careers. Through our STEM framework, EbD™ incorporates STEM disciplines along with English Language Arts, equipping students with the skills and understanding needed to navigate and address the complexities of tomorrow’s world.
Why EbD?
- Incorporates Active Learning Strategies: EbD curricula engages students in hands-on, project-based activities that encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. It encourages teachers to use inquiry-based learning, where students explore and solve real-world problems using an engineering design processes.
- Differentiates Instruction: EbD curricula supports teachers in adapting lessons to meet the diverse needs of students across all grade levels. It provides scaffolding techniques and flexible assessment tools to accommodate different learning styles and abilities, ensuring accessibility for all students.
- Integrates Cross-Curricular Connections: EbD curricula emphasizes the importance of linking integrative STEM concepts to other subjects like math, science, and literacy. It helps teachers deliver lessons that demonstrate how STEM knowledge applies in various fields, fostering interdisciplinary understanding and application.
Implementation Strategies
- Curriculum Integration: Integrate EbD™ into an existing engineering technology education/STEM program or start a new one. We have aligned our entire curriculum to standards linked below which creates a seamless STEM learning experience that complements other subjects.
- Professional Learning: Ensure that teachers receive comprehensive training on the EbD™ curriculum and STEM teaching methods. This can include in person or virtual training, just in time mentoring and/or asynchronous coursework. The annual ITEEA virtual and in person conferences provide great learning opportunities as well.
- Resource Allocation: Provide the necessary resources, such as materials for hands-on projects, technology & engineering equipment, and access to labs or maker spaces. This supports the practical application of STEM concepts.
- Collaborative Learning: Foster a collaborative learning environment where students can work in teams to solve real-world problems. This encourages critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.
- Community Partnerships: Establish partnerships with local businesses, universities, and STEM organizations. These partnerships can provide additional resources, mentorship opportunities, and real-world insights.
- Continuous Assessment: Implement continuous assessment methods to monitor student progress and adjust the program as needed. This can include project-based assessments, student portfolios, and regular feedback sessions.
- Parental Involvement: Engage parents by informing them about the goals and benefits of EbD™. Encourage their involvement in projects and school events to create a supportive learning community.
Standards Alignment
EbD™ offers the Premier Standards-Based Curriculum Model designed to be flexible, affordable, and accountable.
