Public school districts have a high need for many positions, including substitute teachers

With public school districts facing staffing issues, IU13 will host job fairs in Lebanon and Lancaster next week in an effort to attract workers.

There is a high need for many positions in public schools, including substitute teachers, teacher assistants, nurses, secretaries, custodial staff and cafeteria workers, said Flip Steinour, director of human resources for IU13 and the event's organizer

"Local schools have a variety of staffing needs throughout the year," he said. "At any given time, they need substitute teachers, nurses, cafeteria workers, etc."

Many people might not be aware of these flexible job opportunities or how to apply, Steinour said. For example, he said, many people do not realize that if they have a bachelor's degree they are eligible to be a substitute teacher.

"Having a bank of available substitutes is essential for serving our students," Steinour said. "Our schools share this need across the county, so it made sense work collaboratively and create a one-stop shop for applicants to learn more about available positions and even apply on the spot."

Both fairs will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Lebanon's fair will be held at the IU13's Lebanon Office at 1 Cumberland St.

Lancaster's fair will be held at IU13's Lancaster office at 1020 New Holland Ave.

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with school district administrators and apply on the spot.

"This is a new venture for us, and we're excited about the possibilities," Steinour said.

This event is being co-hosted by IU13 and Substitute Teacher Service, in support of the 22 public school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

STS will randomly pick five attendees to receive a $100 Visa gift card.
