Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 Receives Grant for School Store at Community School West
LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA – The Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) Program received a grant from CCRES that will help to supply a behavior-based school store throughout the 2023-2024 school year. About 30 students are involved in this program and are offered various items based on their behavioral grade for the day. The store is divided into levels, and the better the students’ percentage, the better their choices at the school store. The students earn points to spend based on being safe, respectful, and responsible throughout the day.
“The school store has potential to positively impact students on a daily basis throughout the school year,” said Jenna Ginder, Supervisor for Special Education Services at IU13. “Community school students require a highly structured environment with clearly defined behavioral expectations and immediate feedback for their behavior. Students are working on improving their social skills, behavior, and emotional control.”
Ginder noted that they have had a school store for a few years but are working towards continuous improvement based on student feedback. So far, they have used the grant money to get items that are valuable to the kids, including student-suggested items such as gel pens and coloring books, full-sized candy bars, and jewelry-making kits.
The school store’s inventory is made possible by a grant from CCRES, a non-profit organization that partners with intermediate units, school districts, and behavioral health programs to provide specialized support for children and adults with special needs.
