Supporting Students Takes a Championship Team
When people consider working in education, being a teacher is often the first thing that comes to mind. However, at IU13, where students have a variety of special needs, classrooms often require a team of dedicated people to support the needs of the students and teachers. These people – often called classroom aides or paraeducators – may be assigned to work with one student or the entire class based on the situation. Additionally, we even employ LPNs as health care assistants to provide the medical support needed by some children. Together, these dedicated people form a team of champions, helping our students learn and grow every day!
What makes a champion? Our classroom aides and health care assistants are a critical part of serving students at IU13. But, what we’re looking for might surprise you. Degrees? Years of experience? Specialized credentials? Actually, the most important qualities we look for are:
- A desire to help kids with special needs
- An eagerness to learn
IU13 has an ongoing need for part-time and full-time support staff to work with students with special needs throughout Lancaster and Lebanon counties. With a high school diploma or GED, a heart for kids with disabilities, and an eagerness to learn, positions for classroom aides are available now. And LPNs have an opportunity to work as a health care assistant!
Our classroom aides support students ranging from preschool through high school. We often hear them say:
- I love working with kids and would love a job that truly makes a difference.
- I really want to work during the school day so I’m home evenings, weekends, and have the summer with my family.
- I’m thinking about going back to school to teach, but I’d like to get some valuable experience first.
- I need the flexibility to get my son/daughter on and off the school bus.
One thing they all have in common, though, is that they're doing all valuable work worth doing. That’s what makes them champions that we appreciate every day.
