Human Capital Pre-Recorded Webinars
The following on-demand webinars for school and LEA leaders address a variety of human capital topics: supporting educators in remote and blended learning environments (both during and after SY 2020-21); recruiting, hiring and retaining educators; and continuously developing educators. While the webinars take a variety of formats—including panel discussions and interactive planning workbooks—all are intended to further develop leaders’ human capital knowledge, ideas and planning.

Purpose:
This webinar and related tools allow school leaders to reflect on their work thus far in leading and supporting staff through implementation of remote/blended learning, and to consider whether and how to make mid-course adjustments to this work.

Supporting student teachers in remote or blended learning environments
(13 minutes)
Purpose:
Both school/LEA leaders and educator preparation program staff can use this webinar to learn more about supporting student teachers who are placed in blended or remote learning environments—especially when the schools are relatively new to these modes of learning. The webinar also describes specific tasks that student teachers may be well-suited to take on in remote or blended learning.

Recruiting, hiring and retaining educators
Using tools for retention of educators of color: insight interviews and school culture assessment

Purpose:
Learn about overall context for retention of educators of color, with a focus on the development and application of two specific tools for learning more about your school’s climate and culture. These tools are part of a series of toolkits available at https://www.thecenterblacked.org/resources. In this webinar, the Center for Black Educator Development’s CEO, Sharif El-Mekki, discusses how school and LEA leaders can use the toolkit.

Recruiting, hiring and retaining educators of color—Part I
(42 minutes)
Purpose:
Human capital leaders from the Connecticut State Dept. of Education share practices and programs they have used to increase recruitment and retention of educators of color, and answer questions in a panel discussion format, drawing on their prior experiences as LEA educators and leaders.
Beginning at the 13:30 mark, they describe Connecticut’s guidebook for educator hiring and selecting diverse educators and highlight actionable tools in the guidebook that can be particularly useful to school and LEA leaders.

Recruiting, hiring and retaining educators of color—Part 2

Purpose:
Philadelphia’s Sharif El-Mekki, CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, discusses ongoing work to recruit and retain Black educators into the educator pipeline and in the profession. He explains key aspects of culturally responsive teaching, and the importance of staff’s cultural competence to retaining colleagues of color in schools.

Purpose:
School and LEA leaders can use this webinar and the follow-along workbook to consider strategies for recruiting and retaining teachers in hard-to-staff roles (e.g., special education, ESL, or secondary STEM), and to plan how to enhance these practices. Purpose:
Amanda von Moos, a national expert on substitute teachers, gives an overview of innovative approaches to attracting, developing and retaining substitutes. These processes pose major logistical challenges to many school systems, and improving substitute quality can meaningfully impact student learning.

Developing a paraprofessional workforce

Purpose:
The webinar highlights how schools can recruit and retain effective paraprofessionals, and provide job-specific induction, professional learning, and career growth opportunities.
Beginning at the 11:00 mark, Jack Busbee of Washington State’s Paraeducator Certificate Program describes how his state provides training curricula for paraprofessionals, which LEAs can adapt.
At the 23:00 mark, Sharon Zimmern of San Francisco’s Para to Teacher Program explains how her LEA offers career growth for interested paraprofessionals.
At the 41:50 mark, participants discuss effective general practices for training paraprofessionals.
