Each year, over 350 unrestrained fatalities occur on Pennsylvania roadways. To address this, PennDOT promotes behavioral safety programs alongside infrastructure improvements. Still, changing driver behavior remains critical.
On March 26, Jaydon and Chris from Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 presented their idea to boost seat belt use as part of a PennDOT safety challenge. Their concept featured “Super Seat Belt Man,” a kid-friendly character, and a QR code sticker on seat belts tied to a rewards system.
Though not selected as District 8’s winner, the students impressed judges with their creativity and confidence. STEM teacher Andrea Fellows praised their teamwork and adaptability, calling the experience “a lesson in flexibility, tolerance, and understanding.”
PennDOT continues to support seat belt use through grant-funded enforcement and education programs, media campaigns, and outreach across the Commonwealth.
