IU13 School Health Services
Some IU13 programs have nursing services embedded:
- CEC
- NEC
- MDS classrooms
- STW classrooms
- Work Immersion classrooms
If IU13 nursing services are not available withing the building, responsibility for the student’s care is provided by the district/school nurse.
Along with caring for student illnesses and first aid administration, IU13 school nurses:
- maintain health and immunization records
- perform state-mandated health screenings
- administer doctor-prescribed medications & perform treatments
- provide care planning for chronic health conditions
- provide student health promotion education
- provide care planning for chronic health conditions
- provide emergency response
- communicate health needs with families, providers, and school staff, as appropriate
- provide approved staff trainings
- accompany CBI trips as available where nursing services are required

The Pennsylvania Public School Code requires certain school health services for all children of school age. This link, from the PA Department of Health, focuses on the physical examinations and health screenings (growth, hearing, scoliosis, TB, and vision) and houses a link to a grid that provides an overview of all the school health services mandated for school-age children, along with applicable grades. Information on dental health can be found on the Dental Health Program page.
The following exams must be conducted for the listed incoming grades, as required by PA Public School Code.
- Kindergarten Students – Private Physical Examination* and Dental Screening
- Grade 3 Students – Dental Screening
- Grade 6 Students – Private Physical Examination*
- Grade 7 Students – Dental Screening
- Grade 11 Students – Private Physical Examination*
*Private Physical Examinations can happen anytime during the school year or during the prior year.
- For 7th-grade attendance, students will need 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) and 1 dose of meningococcal conjugate (MCV) prior to the first day of their 7th-grade year.
- For 12th-grade attendance, students must receive 1 dose of meningococcal conjugate (MCV) at age 16 or later, prior to the first day of their 12th-grade year.

School Food Service
