Microsoft Server 2019 FAQ

Windows 2019 Server

Win Server Standard 2 core license (minimum of 8 licenses/16 cores per server required)

Win Server Datacenter 2 core license (minimum of 8 licenses/16 cores per server required)

  • All physical cores in the server must be licensed. Servers are licensed based on the number of processor cores in the physical server.
  • A minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
  • A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor.
  • Core licenses will be sold in packs of two.
  • Eight 2-core packs will be the minimum required to license each physical server.
  • Standard Edition provides rights for up to two OSEs or Hyper-V containers when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For every two additional VMs, all the cores in the server have to be licensed again.

System Center 2019 Server

System Center Standard 2 core license (minimum of 8 licenses/16 cores per server required)

System Center Datacenter 2 core license (minimum of 8 licenses/16 cores per server required)

  • License all the physical cores in the server being managed.
  • Minimum of 8 core licenses required for each processor.
  • Minimum of 16 core licenses required for each server.
  • Core licenses will be sold in packs of two.
  • Standard Edition provides rights to manage up to 2 OSEs when all physical cores in the server are licensed. Multiple licenses can be assigned to the same cores to manage additional OSEs.
  • Datacenter Edition provides the rights to manage unlimited OSEs when all physical cores in the server are licensed.
